San Diego Dessert Hot Spot

Hello fellow cupcaketeers! I'm sorry it's been so long. I hope you'll forgive me when I show you the artistic decadence I found in San Diego, recommended by the manager of Joan's on Third:

The fashionable hot spot, Extraordinary Desserts, features a wide range of items that are elaborate in design and taste. Although cupcakes were not a spotlight on the menu (they have only four flavors like banana nut and lemon), homemade ice creams, 10+ flavors of cake, and a variety of cookies and pastries are. The chef boasts a well-traveled background of studies in France and Italy. Her restaurant certainly reflects that both in style of food and decor as well as general pastry flavor.

The ambiance was A+ for fun (if you don't count the long wait, packed bakery area, and loud conversations). The presentation of the desserts was pure culinary art. However, in a family sampling of almost 10 dishes (I have a big family!) we only came up with two dishes that we might venture back for - the macaroon and the strawberry cheesecake. Our other dishes, though pretty to look at, lacked the flavor that tingles our taste buds - it seemed like there were too many flavors going on, like the Iviore Royale with it's vanilla, white chocolate and all kinds of berries inside or a Cherry Chocolate Chip cookie. Maybe it's just that I prefer my flavors separated or subtly blended and this was much more in-your-face.

Nonetheless, this is the happening place to be in San Diego before one hits the clubs in downtown. Overall, I would say that Extraordinary Desserts is definitely an experience - though I would settle for a warm Tollhouse cookie over a gourmet one any day.
